น้ำมันหม้อแปลงไฟฟ้าใช้ในการผลิตหม้อแปลงไฟฟ้าโดยมีคุณสมบัติที่สำคัญ 2 ประการ: คือ เป็นฉนวนไฟฟ้า และ ระบายความร้อน
เป็นฉนวนไฟฟ้า โดยป้องกันกระแสไฟฟ้ากระโดดจากจุดหนึ่งไปยังจุดหนึ่ง ถ้าเทียบกับอากาศแล้ว น้ำมันหม้อแปลงจะทนแรงดันได้สูงกว่าหลายเท่า ทั้งนี้ขึ้นอยู่กับคุณภาพของน้ำมันหม้อแปลงนั้น ดังนั้นถ้าเราจุ่มตัวนำลงในน้ำมัน ก็จะสามารถวางไว้ใกล้กันได้โดยไม่ลัดวงจร
ระบายความร้อนโดยที่น้ำมันเป็นของเหลวจึงสามารถเคลื่อนตัวมาถ่ายเทความร้อนให้แก่อากาศรอบๆ หม้อแปลงได้ดี, ทำให้ขดลวดและแกนเหล็กของหม้อแปลงระบายความร้อนได้ , ทำให้ฉนวนที่พันหุ้มขดลวดทนต่อความร้อนสูงได้ และทำให้ฉนวนไม่ร้อนจัดเกินไปช่วยยืดอายุการใช้งานของหม้อแปลงให้นานขึ้น
Transformer oil is used in the manufacture of electrical transformers with two important properties: electrical insulation and heat dissipation.
Transformer oil is an electrical insulator because it prevents the current to pass through. Compared to air, it can also withstand much higher pressure, depending on the quality of transformer oil. Immersing the conductor in oil allows for electrical components to be placed close to each other without danger of short circuit.
As it is a liquid, the oil can dissipate heat to the surrounding air by flowing through the cooling/radiator tubes. This cooling allows the coil and iron core of the transformer to be cooled, allowing the insulation around the coil to withstand high heat and preventing overheating, extending the life of the transformer.

Two standards of transformer oil are supplied by the company: IEC 296 and IEC 60296
IEC 296 is an international standard that is applicable to specifications and test methods for unused mineral insulating oils used for transformers and switchgears. Similarly, IEC 60296 is an international standard that tests for unused mineral insulating oils used for transformers too, however IEC 60296 has more test methods and greater specifications because of which oils obeying this standard are usually of a higher grade.

สาเหตุการเสื่อมสภาพ
ถูกออกซิเดชัน (oxidation degradation) เกิดเนื่องจากการทำปฏิกิริยากับออกซิเจนภายในหม้อแปลงที่อาจมากับน้ำหรือเข้าสู่หม้อแปลงในขั้นตอนการผลิต ซึ่งจะเกิดการออกซิไดซ์น้ำมันในกลุ่มของสารไฮโดรคาร์บอนที่ไม่อิ่มตัวได้ดี จนเกิดการเสื่อมสภาพของน้ำมัน น้ำมันมีลักษณะเหลืองเข้มมากขึ้นจนกลายเป็นสีน้ำตาลในระยะเวลาที่รวดเร็วกว่าปกติ
น้ำเข้า (hydrolytic degradation) ปัญหาการปนเปื้อนของน้ำที่ผสมในน้ำมันหม้อแปลงมีผลทำให้ลดความการเป็นฉนวนของน้ำมันลง และเพิ่มการเป็นตัวนำไฟฟ้า
สนามแม่เหล็ก (electrical degradation) สนามแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าที่เกิดจากการเหนี่ยวนำของขดลวดแพร่เข้าสู่น้ำมันมีผลทำให้โครงสร้างของน้ำมันเปลี่ยนไป โดยปกติจะทำให้ประสิทธิภาพด้าน Impluse strength ลดลง
ความร้อน (thermal degradation) เกิดจากสภาพน้ำมันที่ได้รับการถ่ายเทความร้อนเป็นเวลานานทำให้องค์ประกอบทางเคมีของน้ำมันเปลี่ยนไปจนเกิดการเสื่อมสภาพ และประสิทธิภาพการระบายความร้อนที่ลดลง
Transformer oil is an oil which is a product of crude oil refining. The oil is used for insulation and to cool the coil inside the transformer. A method of oil immersion is to pump oil through the core coil inside the transformer, which can increase the cooling efficiency by more than 30%.

Transformer oil standards according to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand are as follows:
High dielectric strength more than 30 kV

Resistant to aging of the transformer
Resistant to chemical reactions that may occur inside the transformer
Has a good cooling ability
It has a low evaporation rate
Contains no toxic ingredients
Causes of deterioration
Oxidation (oxidation degradation) - caused due to the reaction with oxygen inside the transformer that may come with water or enter the transformer in the production process, which will oxidize the unsaturated hydrocarbons until the deterioration of the oil. The oil looks darker yellow to brown at a faster rate than usual.
Water ingress (hydrolytic degradation) - caused due to the contamination problem of water mixed in transformer oil which results in reducing the insulating strength of the oil and increase electrical conductivity.
Magnetic field (electrical degradation) - caused due to the electromagnetic field generated by the induction of the coil which when diffuses into the oil, causes the structure of the oil to change. Normally, the impluse strength performance of the oil will decrease.
Thermal degradation - caused by the oil being heated for a long time, which causes the chemical composition of the oil to change until it deteriorates. This results in reduced cooling performance.
